The 30th anniversary of Khojaly Genocide
The Khojaly genocide and other crimes against humanity perpetrated by Armenia against the Republic of Azerbaijan constitute a serious violation of international humanitarian and human rights law.
The Republic of Armenia continued its crimes against humanity with the deliberate targeting of Azerbaijani civilians during the Second Karabakh War in 2020 using the same terror tactics but with enhanced military equipment. Both of these crimes against humanity illustrate an intentional violence against Azerbaijanis. The European Court of Human Rights mentioned that the actions committed during Khojaly Genocide qualify as “acts of particular gravity which may amount to war crimes or crimes against humanity”. Also, the national legislative bodies of 17 countries, as well as 24 States of the USA assessing the massacre of civilians in Khojaly as a crime against humanity.
Today, Azerbaijan has restored its territorial integrity and more than 700 thousand Azerbaijanis displaced from Karabakh will be able to go return to their homes. Khojaly residents too, will eventually go back to Khojaly.
The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Canada hopes that within the framework of existing international law, individuals who are responsible for serious crimes committed during Armenia’s aggression against Azerbaijan will be brought to justice.
