Black January Commemoration in Ottawa
On January 19th, 2016, the Embassy of Azerbaijan hosted an event to commemorate the tragic events of Black January, which took place on January 20th, 1990. Some members of the Azerbaijani Diaspora gathered at the Embassy to remember the fallen martyrs. The commemoration began with Chargé d'Affaires Mr. Ramil Huseynli addressing the guests. Following the address, pictures depicting the tragedy and the film “Bloody January” were on display.

Organized by the Alberta Azerbaijani Cultural Society (ALACS) and theUniversity ofCalgary's Azerbaijani Student Association (AzSA), this open door event presented information on the Khojaly Genocide in pictures, books and documentaries. Dilshad Aghalarova, the founder of "Sulh" NGO inAzerbaijan, attended the event as a special guest, and she shared her experience in helping refugees from the Garabakh and Khojaly war zones in the late 80s and early 90s.

On Saturday, February 28th, 2016, the children’s art exhibition titled “Khojaly, No to War!”, organized by the Veten Art and Culture Centre, with support of the Embassy of Azerbaijan to Canada, was held at the University of Toronto. Consul of the Embassy, Mr. Faig Babayev, attended the event and informed the guests on the Khojaly massacre during a short speech. The art exhibition featured artwork, which commemorated the Khojaly tragedy, done by children aged 6-9 from the Veten Art and Culture Centre inToronto, and high school students inBaku, which was provided by the ADDIM Youth Organization.
First Azerbaijani Backgammon Championship organized in Calgary
Alberta Azerbaijan Cultural Society (ALACS) held the first Nerd (backgammon) Championship of Canada. 20 members of the Azerbaijani community in Calgaryparticipated in the competition. In the final game, which was held on Saturday, March 5th, 2016, Murad Ibrahimov won over Tamilla Bagirzada, and became the first Nerd champion ofCanada. Murad Ibrahimov was awarded with a traditional Azerbaijani carpet by ALACS President, Famil Garayev.

The event began with the singing of the National Anthem of Azerbaijan, then the two dance groups functioning under ALACS, Calgary Stars andAzerbaijanHeritageDanceAcademy, performed short theatre and national songs and dances.

On December 18th, 2015, the Embassy of Azerbaijan and the Alberta Azerbaijani Cultural Society (ALACS) held a celebration to mark ALACS’ 10th Anniversary and the World Azerbaijanis Solidarity Day. Mr. Faig Babayev, Consul of the Embassy gave a congratulatory message on behalf of the Embassy and presented a Certificate of Recognition to the founder of ALACS for their 10th Anniversary. MP and member of the Canada-Azerbaijani Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group Honourable Deepak Obhrai addressed the event and also presented a certificate to ALACS’ president and founder. Following the opening addresses, Azerbaijani national dances were performed by the "AzerbaijanHeritageDanceAcademy", "Calgary Stars" and "Cucelerim" dance groups.

Rally on the Khojaly Genocide in Ottawa
On February 20, Azerbaijani students from the Universities of Toronto and Waterloo, as well as members of the Azerbaijani communities of Ottawa and Montreal organized a protest on Parliament Hill in Ottawa and then they marched to the Embassy of Armenia, to mark the 23rd anniversary of the Khojaly Genocide.

Embassy of Azerbaijan hosts Nouruz Reception
On March 15th, the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Qarabagh Azerbaijani Language School in Ottawa hosted a reception on the occasion of Nouruz Bayram in Gatineau. The event brought together diplomats, members of the Azerbaijani community in Ottawa and Montreal, and Canadian friends of the Embassy. The Azerbaijani national anthem and other songs were sung, as well as a traditional dance was performed by the young students in the Qarabagh Azerbaijani Language School in Ottawa, while wearing national costumes. Traditional sweets, such as paxlava, shekerbura and goghal, were on display.

Novruz Celebration held in Montreal
On Saturday, March 28th, the Montreal Turkish Community Centre and the Montreal International Centre of Friendship organized a Novruz festival in Montreal. This event brought together the Turkic communities within Canada, which included the embassies of Azerbaijan, Turkey and Kazakhstan. Charge d'Affaires Mr. Ramil Huseynli delivered a speech, in which he stressed the importance of Novruz as a celebration of unity, prosperity and equality amongst people. In addition, Turkish Ambassador Mr. Selcuk Unal, Counsellor of the Kazakh Embassy, Minister of Immigration of Quebec Ms. Kathleen Weil and Member of Parliament Ms. Maria Mourani also addressed the participants of the event. Table displays were done up to represent each country present at the event, and some entertainment of these countries were also showcased, including the young students of the Qarabagh Azerbaijani Language School, who performed traditional Azerbaijani songs and dances.

Geopolitics of Energy of the Caspian Region Conference
Held on Friday, April 10th, 2015, at Carleton University, the Embassies of Azerbaijan, Turkey and Georgia came together with the Faculty of Europe, Russian and Eurasia studies (EURUS) of Carleton University to deliver an informative conference on the issue of energy in the Caspian region titled "Geopolitics of Energy in the Caspian Region". Mr. Alex Vatanka, from the Middle East Institute of Washington, DC, Dr. Afgan Niftiyev, Strategy and Policy Coordinator at the Caspian Strategy Institute of Istanbul, and Adjunct EURUS professor Dr. Robert Cutler were guest panellists who arrived in Ottawa to attend the conference. They addressed the audience in the first panel titled "Azerbaijan as an Energy Power: From the Contract of the Century to TANAP. Charge d'Affaires of the Embassy of Azerbaijan Mr. Ramil Huseynli took part in the second panel titled "Regional Cooperation in the Caspian Region: Energy Trident and Beyond", during which he highlighted the importance of trilateral cooperation between Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey in their joint energy projects. Ambassador of Georgia H.E. Alexander Latsabidze, Ambassador of Turkey H.E. Selcuk Unal, and Dr. Reha Aykul Muratoglu, Head of Transit Petroleum Pipelines Department at the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resource of the Republic of Turkey were also present during this panel. Following each panel, Q&A sessions were held to address specific questions posed by the audience.

Azerbaijan Republic Day celebrated in Canada
On Monday, May 25th, the Embassy of Azerbaijan to Canada hosted a reception at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier to celebrate the 97th Independence Day of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Charge d'Affaires Mr. Ramil Huseynli, and Chair of the Canada-Azerbaijan Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group Mr. Barry Devolin addressed the audience at the opening of the reception. Ambassadors, other members of the diplomatic corps, Members of Parliament, Senators, Government representatives, and Azerbaijani diaspora from Montreal and Ottawa were in attendance. In addition, The Right Honourable Jean Chretien, Former Prime Minister of Canada, joined the event.
Azerbaijan Republic Day Flag Raising Ceremony
On Thursday, May 28th, the Embassy of Azerbaijan hosted a flag raising ceremony to celebrate the Azerbaijan National Republic Day at Ottawa City hall. The small ceremony was attended by Azerbaijani diaspora members from Ottawa. Charge d'Affaires Mr. Ramil Huseynli opened the event with a few words, then the flag was raised to the Azerbaijani National Anthem.

On June 14th, Azerbaijan Day was held in Toronto and was organized by Veten Art & Cultural Centre and the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Canada. Charge d'Affaires of the Embassy of Azerbaijan Mr. Ramil Huseynli and Third Secretary, Head of Consular Services Mr. Faig Babayev attended this event. Mr. Jack MacLaren, MPP and Mr. Huseynli both addressed the audience. Traditional Azerbaijani music and dance were showcased and a meeting was held between the Embassy officials and the Toronto Azerbaijani Diaspora.

Charge d'Affaires Presented Azerbaijan Economy in Vancouver
On Tuesday, August 18th, Charge d'Affaires Mr. Ramil Huseynli and Head of Consular Services Mr. Faig Babayev attended a round table discussion hosted by the Canada Eurasia Russia Business Association (CERBA) in Vancouver. Mr. Huseynli presented an economic overview of Azerbaijan during this discussion. Following the round table discussion, Mr. Huseynli had additional meetings with Trade Commissioners of the DFATD Vancouver regional office, Officials of the BC Ministry of International Trade, and the President of the Canadian Educational Network.
Charge d'Affaires Presented Economic Overview in Calgary
On Wednesday, August 19th, Charge d'Affaires Mr. Ramil Huseynli and Head of Consular services Mr. Faig Babayev arrived in Calgary for a round table discussion with the Canada Eurasia Russia Business Association (CERBA). Mr. Huseynli gave a presentation during the round table on the economic overview of Azerbaijan. Following the presentation, he met with DFATD representatives, and with an Alberta Government and CERBA representative who are organizing a trade mission to Azerbaijan for September 28th to 29th, 2015. Some members of the Azerbaijan Diaspora were present at the discussion.
Bloody January Screened at 39th Montreal World Film Festival
On Wednesday, September 2nd, 2015, an Azerbaijani feature film was screened for the first time at the 39th Montreal World Film Festival (MWFF). President of the MWFF Mr. Serge Losique, the film's Director Mr. Vahid Mustafa Yev, and Charge d'Affaires of the Embassy of Azerbaijan to Canada Mr. Ramil Huseynli attended the movie screening and each addressed the audience to introduce the film. Following their speeches, Mr. Losique and Mr. Huseynli each awarded Mr. Vahid Mustafa Yev for his outstanding work. Bloody January tells the story of the tragic event of January 20th, 1990, when the Soviet Army stormed Baku in a forceful effort to crush the national demand for independence, which killed 133 people and wounded another 700 in the process.

Embassy of Azerbaijan attended event marking Liberation of Baku in Montreal
On Saturday, September 19th, Charge d'Affaires Mr. Ramil Huseynli and Third Secretary, Head of Consular Services Mr. Faig Babayev attended an event in Montreal, which marked the 97th anniversary of the liberation of Baku from the occupation of the Arnenian-Bolshevik army. During the event, Diaspora leader Mr. Masud Aliyev highlighted the indelible role of the Caucasus Islam army of the Ottoman Empire, which was led by Nuru Pasha, in this liberation. Mr. Ramil Huseynli then addressed the audience and called on the members of the Diaspora to demonstrate solidarity and unity to promote the truth about their country in Canada.
Azerbaijan music and dance concert held in Toronto
On Saturday, October 24th, 2015, the world premiere of The Oyan! Project, presented by the Aga Khan Museum, was held in Toronto. Canada's acclaimed Sashar Zarif Dance Theatre teamed up with internationally renowned composer Franghiz Alizadeh of Azerbaijan to put on a performance of music and dance that stems from the ancient traditions of Western and Central Asia. The performance featured a dance composition of contemporary and traditional elements by composer Franghiz Alizadeh, which was performed by two young Azerbaijani artists. The Oyan! Project is the second of a planned trilogy to introduce the art of Mugham to Canadian audiences through Sashar Zarif's Dance of Mugham Series. Following the concert, a reception was held with participation of the Embassy of Azerbaijan to Canada. A second performance was held in the afternoon on Sunday, October 25th.

Azerbaijan: Past and Present
To mark the 130th anniversary of Mammad Emin Rasulzade (1884-1955), one of the founders of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (1918-1920), the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Canada and the Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (EURUS) at Carleton University jointly organized a seminar titled "Azerbaijan: Past and Present" on January 29, 2014.

Ceremonies to Commemorate Khojaly victims in Calgary
On Sunday September 14th, two ceremonies were held in honour of those who were victims of the Khojaly Massacre in 1992. The official opening of a symbolic tree took place in Confederation Park, then afterwards a bench was officially opened in Edworthy Park in Calgary, Alberta. Charge d'Affaires Ramil Huseynli and the Consul of the Embassy of Azerbaijan were in attendance. During the ceremonies, Charge d'Affaires Ramil Huseynli gave a speech and cut the red tape of both of the events. Following this, an acquaintance meeting and a Q&A session regarding consulate matters with local Azerbaijani community members was held at the University of Calgary.
Azerbaijani Film Festival
On September 12-14, 2014, the first Azerbaijani Film Festival in Montreal was held. On the opening night, Friday September 12th, Charge d'Affaires Ramil Huseynli made an opening speech addressing the audience. Over the course of the weekend, 6 different films were shown, which showcased the culture and cinematography in Azerbaijan.
Constitution Day of the Republic of Azerbaijan Marked in Vancouver
On Friday, November 14th, an event marking the Constitution Day of the Republic of Azerbaijan was organized by and held at the Azerbaijani Cultural Centre of Vancouver. The Embassy of Azerbaijan to Canada was in attendance and Charge d'Affaires Mr. Ramil Huseynli addressed the event. A dinner reception featuring Azerbaijani National music and dance followed the event. Then on Saturday, November 15th, a Q&A session between the Embassy and local Diaspora members, including Azerbaijani students, took place at the Azerbaijani Cultural Centre.

On Saturday, December 27th, The Embassy of Azerbaijan organized an event in Canada marking Solidarity Day of World Azerbaijanis, and it brought together members of the Canada-Azerbaijani diasporas from Ottawa and Montreal. Charge d'Affaires Mr. Ramil Huseynli of the Embassy opened the event by addressing the guests. Further into the evening, videos portraying Azerbaijan were shown and traditional Azerbaijani music was played.

Azerbaijani Dance and Music Performance Held in Canada
A concert of Azerbaijani music and dances was held in Niagara-on-the-Lake on July 21. The Araz Dance and Music Ensemble from Toronto performed at the concert organized within the framework of Music Niagara.
National Leader Heydar Aliyev's 90th Anniversary Marked in Ottawa
On April 19, the Embassy has organized a concert dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev. The concert featured the music of Azerbaijani and European Composers performed by Canada's well known musical ensemble Quartetto Gelato with guest artist Atis Bankas, internationally renowned Canadian violinist, Artistic Director of Music Niagara, the international summer festival.
Rally on the Khojaly Genocide in Ottawa
Members of the Azerbaijani-Canadian community held a rally in front of Parliament Hill on February 22 to commemorate the 21st anniversary of the Khojaly genocide committed by the Armenian military forces on February 25-26, 1992. Protesters demanded a halt to the Armenian occupation policy, and called Canada to assess the issue and put pressure on Armenia. Protesters also picketed in front of the Armenian Embassy in Ottawa.

Rally on the Khojaly Genocide in Ottawa
A rally on the 20th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide organized by members of the Azerbaijani community living in Canada took place in front of Parliament in Ottawa on February 24. During the rally, slogans against the crimes committed by Armenian nationalists in 1992 and the occupation policy that has continued since 1988 were heard, and leaflets with information about the Khojaly genocide were distributed. Protesters demanded a halt to the Armenian occupation policy, and called Canadian MPs to assess the issue and put pressure on Armenia. Protesters also picketed in front of the Armenian Embassy in Ottawa.
McGill University Hosts a Conference to Commemorate the 20th Anniversary of Genocide in Khojaly
On February 16, the Association of Azerbaijanis of Quebec jointly with the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Canada organized a conference on ArmenianAzerbaijani Conflict. The conference focused on discussion of political and legal aspects, as well as the ways of the resolution of the conflict. The event featured presentations by distinguished scholars from the Royal Military College of Canada, Laurentian University and the Canadian International Institute of Applied Negotiation.
Commemorating Black January
On January 18, the Embassy of Azerbaijan hosted a concert of classical music to commemorate the Black January 1990 tragedy when Soviet troops invaded Baku and to mark the struggle of the Azerbaijani people for independence. The concert featured the Toronto Mendelssohn Trio performed works by Azerbaijani, Russian, and Western European composers.

Carleton University Hosts Academic Conference on Azerbaijan
On November 3, the Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (EURUS) at Carleton University jointly with the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Canada organized a conference entitled "Azerbaijan: after 20 years of independence from the Soviet Union". The conference focused on various topics such as the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, the role of Azerbaijan in European energy projects and the role of Azerbaijani language in the development of national identity.

"Agdam - Caucasian Hiroshima" exhibition organized at the University of Ottawa
From October 21 to 28, 2011, the Azerbaijani Canadian Council and the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Canada organized the photo exhibition 'Agdam-Caucasian Hiroshima' at the University of Ottawa.
At the opening ceremony of the exhibition which took place on October 24, Mr. Andre Widmer, an independent Swiss journalist and author of the photos displayed at the exhibition informed the audience about the massive destruction of thousands of cultural and religious monuments by the Armenian military forces in the occupied Azerbaijani territories.
Celebrating Azerbaijan's 20 Years Independence from the Soviet Union
On October 12, 2011, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of regaining independence by the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Canada organized a reception at the Headquarters of the International Civil Aviation Organization in Montreal. The event brought together H.E. Mr. Raymond Benjamin, the Secretary General of the ICAO, foreign diplomats accredited to ICAO, as well as representatives of Azerbaijani and Turkish communities living in Montreal.
Azerbaijani Cultural Days in Niagara
On August 25-27 the days of Azerbaijani Culture were organized in Niagara-on-the-Lakes, showcasing the Azerbaijani music and sculptures.

On November 30, 2010 a French language theatre performance about the Azerbaijani refugees titled "Gulnara's dress" (La robe de Gulnara), dedicated to the problems of refugees in Azerbaijan and written by a Canadian Isabelle Hubert, was shown in Montreal.

Independence Day Reception and Concert of Azerbaijani Classic and Folk Music
On May 25, 2010 the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Canada organized a reception and a concert of Azerbaijani classical and folk music to celebrate the 92nd anniversary of Independence Day. The concert featured the music of Uzeyir Hajibeyov, Gara Garayev, Hasan Rzayev as well as mugham, traditional Azerbaijani folk music performed by Toronto Silk Road Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Ismayil Hajiyev and mugham trio from Azerbaijan: Munis Sharifov (kemancha), Sahib Pashazade (tar), Eydiram Huseynov (vocal).

Azerbaijani Movie Premiered in Ottawa
On March 30, 2010 Azerbaijani movie "Gala" (Fortress) premiered at the Bytowne Cinema in Ottawa. The movie attended 33rd Montreal World Film Festival last year and was among the candidates for "the best foreign movie" for Oscar in 2008. The film, which was about on love, heroism and war, was welcomed by the Canadian audience very warmly.

20th Anniversary of Black January
On January 17, 2010, the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan together with the Azerbaijani Community of Canada held an event in Toronto, on the occasion of 20th anniversary of Black January tragedy. The event attended by the community members and members of federal and provincial parliament of Canada once again commemorated the martyres of the tragedy, who lost their lifes for the independence of Azerbaijan from the USSR.

On November 17, 2009 Canadian-Azerbaijani Interparliamentary Friendship Group held a reception in honor of H.E. Farid Shafiyev, newly appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Canada. The event was attended by the Group members, as well as other senators and MPs of Canadian Parliament, including the Honourable Peter Milliken, Chair of the House of Commons.

Scholarly Conference: Azerbaijan in the Caspian Geopolitical Context
On November 12, 2009, The Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, Carleton University jointly with the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan organized scholarly conference on Azerbaijan. The agenda of the conference included geopolitical situation in the South Caucasus, regional security and energy environment, Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Turkey-Armenian rapprochement and other topics.

Khojaly Massacre: Crime and No Punishment
On March 2, 2009 at National Library and Archive Canada the Azerbaijani Community of Ottawa with the support of the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan hosted a presentation entitled "Khojaly Massacre: Crime and No Punishment" dedicated to the massacre of February 25-26, 1992 committed by the Armenian Armed Forces in the Mountainous Karabakh region of Azerbaijan. Mr. Thomas Goltz, American professor and journalist, was the key speaker. His presentation was followed by comments from Mr. Matt Eisenbrandt, Legal Coordinator from the Canadian Centre of International Justice on war crimes and accountability.

Day of the Genocide of Azerbaijanis Marked in Ottawa
On March 30, 2008, several Azerbaijani community organizations from Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto associated with the Assembly of Canadian Azerbaijani Associations gathered at the Parliament Hill to commemorate the Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis. The day is referring to the tragic events that happened on March 31-April 1, 1918 when Armenian nationalists murdered about 12,000 Azerbaijanis in Baku and other settlements.

Photo Exhibition: Destroyed Azerbaijani Monuments by Armenian Armed Forces, Ottawa University
On March 26 - April 6, 2008 the Azerbaijani Community of Ottawa organized a photo exhibition titled "PRESERVING RICHES OF HISTORY IN A PHOTO EXPOSE ON THE DESTRUCTION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE AND ANCIENT MONUMENTS". The exhibition displayed a small sampling of destroyed Azerbaijani cultural monuments in the territories under Armenian military occupation.
